How to Clean Sterling Silver Jewelry at Home (and Stop It Tarnishing)

Sterling silver darkens over time. This is called tarnish, and it happens when silver reacts with sulphur in the air. It is completely normal and easy to clean. Here is how to clean sterling silver jewelry safely at home.

Everyday cleaning: soap and warm water

  1. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap into a bowl of warm water.
  2. Gently clean the piece with a soft cloth or a soft toothbrush, paying attention to the back of settings.
  3. Rinse in clean water and dry thoroughly with a soft, lint-free cloth.

For light tarnish, finish with a silver polishing cloth. Polish in straight strokes rather than circles.

Heavier tarnish: baking soda paste

Mix baking soda with a little water to make a paste. Rub it on gently with a soft cloth, rinse well and dry. Avoid toothpaste, which can be too abrasive and leave fine scratches.

Take care with these gemstones

Some stones are soft or porous and should not be soaked or scrubbed. Wipe these with a damp cloth only and polish the silver around them carefully:

Also avoid harsh dips and polishes on oxidised silver, as they can remove the intentional dark antique finish.

How to stop silver tarnishing

  • Store each piece in a small airtight bag or a lined jewelry box. Anti-tarnish strips help.
  • Put jewelry on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray.
  • Take it off before swimming, using cleaning products or going in a hot tub.
  • Wear it often. Regular wear and gentle polishing keep silver bright.
